| Here's Axel and a gaggle of kids in a Twin Cities supermarket, probably in early 1956. The special offer described on the sign in the background was for Axel's Pancake Pan. The odd combination of goofy Scandihoovian and cooking utensil was evidently a promotion devised by Billy Boy, a maker of jams, jellies, and syrups -- and a sponsor of Axel and His Dog in the 1950s.
